However, in March, it began to rain, and it rained well\u2014<strong>a steady, soaking rain<\/strong> that doesn\u2019t cause harm, doesn\u2019t erode the soil, and benefits everything.<\/p><p>The weather stations closest to our vineyards (Sant Mart\u00ed Sarroca, La Bisbal del Pened\u00e8s, La Llacuna, and Font-rub\u00ed) reported rainfall in March ranging from 60 to 90 l\/m\u00b2.<\/p><p>It was a <strong>very good spring and start to summer<\/strong>. It\u2019s worth mentioning that many plants were already dead due to the drought of recent years, but those on the brink of dying came back strongly.<\/p><p>Thanks to the nearly <strong>300 l\/m\u00b2<\/strong> of rain we received from March to June, the plants appeared more vibrant and robust than they had in the last three years of extreme drought. Our vineyards were largely spared, but a few important plots were hit: the Macabeo at Cal Jepet and the Xarel\u00b7lo at Cal Miret.<\/p><p>Also, in early June, we began to suspect it would be a year of downy <strong>mildew<\/strong>: the combination of rain and high temperatures\u2014what is now known as the tropicalization of the climate\u2014created the perfect conditions for the spread of downy mildew and powdery mildew, even while the grapes were still green. Additionally, forest hunting pressure (from animals like wild boar or roe deer) exacerbated the situation by damaging crops as they foraged, often destroying both fruit and plants.<\/p><p>Downy mildew causes the leaves to dry out, halting photosynthesis, which in turn hinders the plant&#8217;s ripening process. When the fungus reaches the grape, it dries it out, leaving no juice. The grape turns into a raisin.<\/p><p>The good news is that this year the grapes have not suffered sunburn due to excessive heat, as the canopy was quite lush thanks to the rains and the vigor of the plants.<\/p><p>In the last week of July and the first days of August, we experienced a <strong>heat wave<\/strong> in Pened\u00e8s, with temperatures between 38 and 40 degrees, sustained for three or four days. The high temperatures caused the fruit to ripen faster than we had anticipated.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\"><div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><p>Thus, on <strong>August 6<\/strong>, we began the earliest harvest in Par\u00e9s Balt\u00e0&#8217;s history, starting with the varieties used for making cava base wine. To qualify the wine as cava, the DO sets a maximum alcohol content of 12.5%. The most prudent approach, therefore, is to harvest the grapes when they are at a probable alcohol content of between 10 and 11.5%, as the second fermentation will increase the final alcohol level.<\/p>\n\n<p>As of today, September 3, the harvest continues, and to answer the most frequently asked question: grape production is quite similar to the 2023 harvest, with <strong>significant losses<\/strong>, but this time is not due to drought, but due to downy mildew and powdery mildew.<\/p><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"850\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/paresbalta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-274885\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:850px;height:389px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1.jpg 850w, https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1-600x275.jpg 600w, https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1-768x351.jpg 768w, https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1-500x229.jpg 500w, https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1-800x366.jpg 800w, https:\/\/paresbalta.stg.uzero.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Verema-Pares-Balta-2024-1-100x46.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/div><p>For now, we can begin analyzing the wines in the cellar, and the results are promising:<\/p><p><strong>Alcohol levels: low\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: medium; white-space-collapse: collapse;\"><\/span><\/p><p><strong>Colors: spectacular<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Tannins: smooth\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: medium; white-space-collapse: collapse;\"><\/span><\/p><p><strong>Aromas: intense<\/strong><\/p><p>We will keep you posted.
